Austin Peking Opera Club
Austin Peking Opera Club is essentially a self-entertaining group,
consisting of about 10 active members. Some are highly experienced, while some
are new to the traditional Peking Opera. Almost every member is able to perform
singing, and to play as a member of band as well. The orchestra band consists of
three instruments: Jing Hu (like violin), Er Hu (like viola) and moon harp (like Guitar).
The percussion band consists of four instruments: drum, castanets, bells and
cymbals. As a result, almost everybody has their own role to play as only one or a
pair (in duet) is singing.

Two members in “Hua-Dana” (young female role), Ms. Ellen Gu and Ms. Da-Yun Hu,
have long well-trained experiences on stage. Three members in Lao Sheng (leading
male role), who also perform Jing Hu, Er hu and moon harp, Mr. Johnny Zhang, Mr.
Frank Yang, and Mr. Gong-rui Wang, have moderate experiences on stage for many
years also.

The new active members are Mr. Peter Chang (drummer), Ms. Lei Gao and Ms. Yong-
Li Shao in "Lao Dan" (senior female role), Mr. Yue Zhang in "Jing" (male role with
painted face), and Ms. Lu Ying in "Hua-Dan" (young female role). They are also the
core members of the percussion band.

Some members have performed on stage occasionally in Austin before 2000. In
recent years they joined the performance with the clubs in Houston and Dallas.
